The Elk Rut
The elk rut in Estes Park.
For a few weeks each fall, the meadows outside Estes Park fill with the sound of bull elk bugling for their harems. It is one of the great wildlife spectacles in North America, and the lodge sits about ten minutes above it all.
The Timing
When they bugle.
The rut builds through September, peaks in the last week of the month and the first of October, then tapers by mid-to-late October. Dawn and dusk are the shows: cold air, low light, and bulls bugling back and forth across the grass. Come on a weekday if you can, and give yourself both ends of the day.

The Spots
Where to see them.
The famous meadows are inside Rocky Mountain National Park: Moraine Park and Horseshoe Park, both about ten minutes from the lodge. But the elk do not read maps. During the rut whole herds wander into town, and some of the best sightings are on the Estes Park Golf Course and around Lake Estes, no park pass required.

The Etiquette
How to watch responsibly.
Bull elk in the rut are powerful and unpredictable, so the rules matter. Rocky Mountain National Park asks visitors to stay at least 75 feet away, and more during the rut. Never get between a bull and his harem, watch the meadows from the road, and keep your distance for the photo. During the rut the park closes the prime meadows to foot traffic in the evenings, and rangers are on hand to help keep everyone safe.

The Basecamp
Ten minutes from the meadows.
The rut is a dawn-and-dusk sport, which makes where you stay part of the plan. The lodge is about ten minutes from the Moraine Park meadows, high on a private ridge, so you can be out for the first bugle at sunrise and back at the fire before the crowds. Fall is wood-stove season up here, and the deck has its own front-row seat on the mountains.
